About Cheryl Song
Cheryl Song has 20 years of experience working with children and families as a licensed early childhood educator, family educator, columnist and children’s book author. Wanting to contribute to the next generation of early childhood educators, Cheryl has also supported her field by training and mentoring post-secondary ECE students.
Cheryl’s specialty in multicultural education stems from her own experience of being a first generation immigrant herself, growing up multicultural environment. Preserving and appreciating heritage and language, as well as enhancing family connections became the core of Cheryl’s work. Concerned about the negative impact of globalization and technology on family relationships, Cheryl became interested in maintaining cultural roots, language, and history. Her passion is in supporting families of diverse backgrounds, and promoting healthy and positive family relationships–particularly amongst families who may feel disconnected to the new country they now call home.
Wanting to make a difference and help others, Cheryl Song has served as the “Parenting” columnist for Canadian Immigrant magazine, “a national multimedia platform to help immigrants succeed in Canada by providing the information, inspiration and connections they need (https://canadianimmigrant.ca/).” In print and online for over a decade, Cheryl has been an informative, multicultural voice on parenting issues and raising children in Canada. Recently, the magazine honored her work and contributions with a publication– a compilation of her best Canadian Immigrant articles covering a vast array of issues (from school to health to child development). Her tips and strategies are not only helpful for immigrant parents, but any parent! https://canadianimmigrant.ca/wp-content/uploads/Parenting-booklet-final.pdf
Passionate about bringing people together through creative, entertaining and engaging projects, Cheryl utilizes stories, songs and rhymes that are simple, but represent the best approaches for children to explore and learn new languages. Unable to find suitable teaching materials, Cheryl set out to create her own language materials that are educational, relatable, and captivating. She has authored her first self-published bilingual (Chinese/English) children’s book entitled, Five Little Monkeys Swing In The Tree. Along with her illustrator, Jinchen Cai, a University of Waterloo architectural student who is equally passionate about preserving and appreciating Chinese heritage and language, Cheryl and Jinchen hope to help parents and children engage in fun family learning activities that build lasting memories that can be shared with future generations. Five Little Monkeys can be purchased from website here.
